First Day of Sagamore Bridge Lane Restrictions Grind Traffic to a Halt

SAGAMORE – Cape Cod drivers got a taste of what the next month and a half will be like crossing the canal as Sagamore Bridge lane restrictions went into effect Thursday.

There were major delays Thursday on Route 6 Westbound, Route 3 Southbound, Route 6A, Route 130, and Sandwich Road.

Some drivers reported sitting in traffic for more than 2 hours waiting to get off the Cape during the afternoon commute.

The Army Corps of Engineers has closed down one lane in each direction until Memorial Day to replace damaged roadway joints on the bridge.

The lane restrictions will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, although crews will not be working around the clock.

A similar project is planned on the Bourne Bridge in the fall.
