First sperm whale to wash up on Nantucket in decades towed from beach

NANTUCKET – A dead whale that washed ashore on Nantucket earlier this month has been removed.

The sperm whale weighing about 50 tons and measuring about 50 feet was the first of the species to wash up on Nantucket since 2002.

The New England Aquarium and federal agencies responded to perform a necropsy.

A tugboat from Robert B. Our Company pulled the whale carcass on Friday from 40th Pole Peach on the Island’s north side.
