BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker is calling for a three-day limit on first-time prescriptions for opioid painkillers and changes in the state’s civil commitment laws as part of a strategy to curtail a surge in drug overdoses.
Baker on Thursday filed legislation that would limit patients to a three-day supply of painkillers the first time they are prescribed an opioid drug, or when they receive a prescription from a new doctor.
Baker has been critical of what he calls the overprescribing of painkillers he says often lead to addiction to opioids, including heroin.
The bill includes a provision that would allow medical professionals to involuntarily commit a person to a drug treatment facility for up to 72 hours if they pose a danger to themselves or others. Current law requires a judge’s order.
