Harvard Drops “House Master” Title After Students Complain 

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Harvard is moving away from the title “house master” to describe faculty members that oversee undergraduate residences at the Ivy League university.

School officials say they haven’t yet decided on a replacement title.

They say the move has been contemplated for some time but was taken now, in part, because students have complained the word “master” evokes slave owners, the Boston Globe reports .

At Harvard, house masters oversee sophomore, junior and senior student residence halls.

The move comes as Harvard Law School is considering changing its seal, elements of which come from the crest of the slave owning Royall family.

Princeton University in New Jersey recently dropped the “house master” reference for its dormitory heads in favor of the title “head of college.”
