Harwich Center Initiative Group to Take Summer Break

HARWICH – The Harwich Center Initiative group will be out of action until the fall.

The decision came in a February meeting where committee members shared their frustrations with the process of revitalizing Harwich Center.

Town residents questioned committee members on their cooperation with other town committees and groups on individual aspects of the revitalization. Members were left to give the explanation that specific goals for the group were not specifically defined, leaving the group butting heads with political committees of the town.

“There’s so much happening in town that Harwich Center is a part of, between the local comprehensive plan, the cultural districts we’re going forward with and other various projects,” said Harwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cyndi Williams, also a member of the committee.

“So, once those all of those have happened, then the committee can then be a part of forging ahead of some of the pieces that the committee could be influential with.”

The scope of the group’s responsibilities include improving the functionality and visual of the area, stimulating economic vitality in the village, and making a more enjoyable and cohesive village.

Other goals include increasing market rate and workforce housing in the area, something committee member Ginny Hewitt says should be delegated through town committees.
