Hearing Set for Tuesday on Planned Sale of Plymouth & Brockton Bus Company

PLYMOUTH – A transportation company that provides bus service on Cape Cod could soon be under new ownership.

The state’s Department of Public Utilities will hold a hearing Tuesday afternoon to discuss the transfer of ownership of the Plymouth & Brockton Street Railway Co. from the Anzuoni family to an ownership group which includes the former Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation John Cogliano.

The new ownership group would also include Winthrop Sargent, CEO of Winthrop Capital Advisors, and Paul Fuerst, the founder and president of Fuerst & Associates.

Plymouth & Brockton operates routes between Boston and Plymouth, Boston and Hyannis, and Hyannis to Provincetown.

In January, the company lost the state subsidized Mid Cape and Outer Cape route to Peter Pan.

“Our hope is that the new owners will continue to service this area,” said Plymouth-Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo.

“We rely a great deal, especially here on Cape Cod, with the transportation infrastructure.”

DeMacedo hopes new ownership continues to operate the current bus services and routes.

“I’m hopeful that this transition is a smooth transition for all of us who are concerned about transportation needs on Cape Cod,” deMacedo said.

Plymouth & Brockton has been providing passenger service for more than 120 years and has been owned by the Anzuoni family since 1948.

“They have been great community partners in this area and have provided a vital service,” deMacedo said. “I just want to thank the Anzuoni family for all of the years they have served us and I wish them well.”

Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Administrator Tom Cahir said he hopes to meet with the new ownership if the sale receives approval.

“We are going to talk about ways we can coordinate service and just try to improve the way we provide all of that service to the people, not only on the Cape but all the way up and throughout Logan,” Cahir said.

Cahir previously served as the deputy secretary of transportation under Cogliano, one of the proposed buyers.

“I worked very closely with John for years,” Cahir said. “He’s a good man and he’s a smart transportation mind.”

Cahir said he expects to meet with Cogliano if the purchase is formalized.

A message left with Plymouth and Brockton had not been returned last week.
