Hidden Hyannis Murals Now on Display in Osterville

OSTERVILLE – The recently uncovered murals painted by a well-known Cape Cod artist are now on display at the Osterville Historical Museum.

The museum is now the home to 3 5-foot wide murals painted by Vern Coleman in the 1930’s. They were discovered during a renovation of KKatie’s Burger Bar on Main Street in Hyannis and were originally installed at the former Mayflower Restaurant.

After the renovation was complete, the owner of KKatie’s donated the murals, depicting Cape Cod, to the museum.

Coleman was known for his work painting the scenes of Barnstable’s villages, Cape Cod, and the sea. The murals now on display capture a snapshot of Barnstable in the 1930’s.

“The museum is honored to be the home of these murals. Not only do they represent moments in time in our shared nautical history on the Cape, they also honor Vernon Coleman the teacher,” said Jennifer Williams, the museum’s Executive Director. “As a teacher here in Osterville, he touched so many lives – instilling a love of art.”

Coleman was an art teacher at both the Osterville Bay School and Barnstable high school. He died in 1978.

The museum was the recipient of a grant that allowed them to restore the murals, which were hidden behind walls at the main street building for many years.

The Osterville Historical Museum is open through September 15.
