Historic Photos of Barnstable on Display at Town Hall

Historic photographs of Barnstable are on display at Town Hall as part of the “Art on Loan” program.

“A Tale of Two Villages – The North and the South View of our Town” is on exhibit in the second floor meeting rooms through October 15.

From the always changing Main Street of Hyannis to the evolving uses of Barnstable Harbor, the history of the villages is explored through photos of work and life.

The exhibit is a collaboration between the Barnstable Historical Society and the Hyannis Historical Society.

The Barnstable Historical Society was founded in 1939 with a mission to preserve the cultural heritage and maritime history of the seven villages of the town.

The society’s collection includes memorabilia from the town’s seafaring days, ships’ models, a quilt collection, kitchen tools, paintings, documents from the 17th to 20th centuries, a children’s room, treasures from residents of years past, and Donald Trayser’s collection of photographs and documents. Trayser was a former editor of The Barnstable Patriot.

The Hyannis Historical Society celebrates the rich history of the town’s central village. Its members are committed to the “protection, preservation and promotion of the community’s unique and diverse historic fabric.”

The society had been defunct for decades with only traces of their artifacts left at the Hyannis Public Library. The society was given a second life in May of 2016, and is looking into a partnership with and home at the Hyannis Public Library.

The “Art on Loan” program at Town Hall is free and open to the public. Town Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on state and federal holidays, and is frequently open during evening hours for scheduled meetings.
