Historic Storm Brought Damage, Erosion, Flooding to Sandwich

IMG_1502SANDWICH – Storm damage is being assessed in Sandwich after this week’s historic storm. The town’s coast was hit hard by flooding, and dunes suffering significant damage from the storm.

“This one’s pretty bad,” said Sandwich Natural Resources Director Mark Galkowski. “Significant dune damage up and down the coast, particularly in the Spring Hill Beach and Town Neck Beach area. We have structures damaged. We have some that are probably beyond repair.”

The recent emergency dune restoration project at Town Neck Beach provided critical protection to the damaged area, according to Galkowski, “If we hadn’t done that, we may have another cut right in that location.”

Galkowski said this storm was the worst he could remember during his time on the job, including the no name storm of 1991.
