Crocker Files Legislation to Protect Students Boarding Buses

BARNSTABLE – Centerville State Representative Will Crocker testified last week in support of legislation that aims to use video cameras to improve the safety of children riding school buses.

“An Act Protecting Children Boarding School Buses” went before the Join Committee of Transportation last Wednesday.

This legislation was created in response to a sharp increase in accidents involving distracted drivers.

The act would require school buses to be equipped with cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle that begin recording when the bus is in use.

The goal is to monitor oncoming traffic as well as record the license plates of violating vehicles attempting to pass a stopped school bus when its lights are flashing and its stop sign is out.

One Barnstable bus driver estimated that their bus was passed by other motorists at least two times a week.

The legislation is now awaiting a vote by the Joint Committee on Transportation.
