New Nantucket Cottage Hospital Opens Today

NANTUCKET – The new Nantucket Cottage Hospital opens its doors to patients today.

The nearly $90 million hospital is the first new medical facility on the island in more than 60 years.

The 14-bed, 106,000-square-foot hospital will feature state-of-the-art equipment and expanded outpatient service, along with inpatient care and surgery.

The facility provides a central location for the community’s health care needs, including primary care, emergency, specialty care and diagnostic testing.

The hospital features 14 inpatient beds, with four designated for the maternity ward. It will have 29 clinical exam rooms for primary care, expanded labor and delivery services, a new heliport landing, a trauma room, five infusion bays, and 12 emergency examination rooms.

“Our new hospital is the incredible result of a small island community coming together to do something big,” said Margot Hartmann, the president and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

“This dynamic new facility will give our patients the best of both worlds, allowing us to leverage the expertise and resources of our trusted affiliate, Massachusetts General Hospital, paired with the comfort, tradition and familiarity of Nantucket’s beloved community hospital.”

The facility will also meet hurricane design specifications allowing it to withstand winds in excess of 185 mph. Other resilient design features include the installation of mechanical systems on the roof rather than in the basement.

The hospital has also been designed to account for the seasonal swings in population, as the year-round community of 17,000 increases to 50,000 during the summer months.

The final phase of the project will begin with the demolition of the old building and the completion of the final site work, parking area and landscaping. The final stage is expected to be completed by June.

The new hospital was made possible through a $120 million capital campaign. The new campus was built free of debt and with no taxpayer dollars.
