New Partnership Helps Outer Cape Residents With Healthcare Transportation

HYANNIS – The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, Peter Pan Bus Lines, and Cape Cod Healthcare have formed a partnership to help Cape Cod residents have greater access to healthcare.

This partnership will feature a Peter Pan Bus line that runs from Provincetown to the Hyannis Transportation Center where riders can transfer to the CCRTA lines to reach multiple Cape Cod Healthcare locations.

“There’s 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts, and the longest distance between any community and a hospital is Provincetown to Hyannis,” said CCRTA Administrator Tom Cahir.

Along the way, the Peter Pan Bus will also make stops at Fontaine Medical Center in Harwich and at the Outer Cape Health Services Clinic in Wellfleet, before going to the Cape Cod Hospital, allowing riders to access multiple forms of health services.

“There’s 400 square miles that the CCRTA is responsible for, 15 towns, and 220,000 people who live here year round that goes to 700,000 in the summer. The roads were built never really to accommodate the volumes they deal with now. So public transportation getting to healthcare needs is critical—and it’s critical 365 days a year,” said Cahir.

The CCRTA already provides a similar program with bus routes that travel to sixteen various Boston hospitals five days a week, and this new program will provide an option for residents who would prefer to receive service from local providers.

“It’s important that people who want to stay local and still get superior healthcare—which Cape Cod Healthcare provides—they have this option as well,” he said.

These route additions are expected to be introduced over the next few months.

“On the Cape, what I always try to do is work and collaborate with all the organizations that can make the quality of life better not only for seniors but for everybody, and we’re doing so with some success,” said Cahir.

Riders should check PeterPanBus.com for schedules and tickets for the new service when it becomes available.
