Joint Base Cape Cod Plans Munitions Explosions

BOURNE – A noise advisory has been posted by Joint Base Cape Cod in preparation for an upcoming munitions demolition at Camp Edwards.

As part of the Army National Guard’s Impact Area Groundwater Study Program, several military munition items are going to be located and cleaned up from the area.

Some of these unexploded munitions are unsafe to transport and instead must be destroyed in the place they are found.

The demolition will be performed two miles away from the Camp Edwards boundary with Bourne and 1.7 miles from its boundary with Sandwich.

However, the detonations will be larger than past explosion disposal and will still likely be audible to the community in the area, but will not pose any risk to the general public.

Residents can expect a brief, loud noise similar in intensity to a loud thunder clap when the detonation happens. Officials will try to contain and minimize the noise.

The demolitions are planned for December 16 through 18, weather permitting.
