Officials Remind Beachgoers: No Seal Selfies!

BARNSTABLE – Approaching marine mammals and other wild creatures is against the law, but NOAA Fisheries is reminding beachgoers to stay away from seals as seal pup season continues.

No matter how cute, approaching baby seals for that perfect picture is dangerous, as the little ones’ mother is typically not far away.

This can result in some dangerous situations for both humans and the seals.

Seals have powerful jaws which might kill or seriously injure a human. Stressed animals are more likely to act unpredictably.

It is normal to see a seal leave her pup alone on the beach for up to 24 hours while she feeds.

Officials ask recreationists to remain at least 50 yards from seal pups at all times and to call (866) 755-NOAA (6622) to report any pups which could be in trouble.

If abuse or marine animal harassment is spotted, officials ask beachgoers to call (800) 853-1964.
