BUZZARDS BAY – The focus of the first public meeting about the Cape Cod Canal Transportation Study was whether to repair or replace the Bourne Bridge and the Sagamore Bridge.

Army Corps of Engineers and Mass Department of Transportation officials say a third bridge is part of a separate parallel process having to do with public/private partnerships.

But they say the existing bridges at 80 years old will need more and more repairs if they are not replaced.

Cape Cod Commission Transportation Specialist Glenn Cannon says whether to repair or replace the bridges is really the question.

Cannon was among about 90 people to attend last night’s meeting at the Mass Maritime Academy.

The study is scheduled to be completed next fall and there will be a number of public meetings over the next ten months to share findings with Cape Codders, MassDOT officials say.
