OSTERVILLE – The future of the former Osterville Bay Elementary School will be discussed at the public meeting tonight at the Osterville Bay Library.
The deteriorating building has been vacant since 2008, and would take over 6 million dollars to renovate. That cost is seen as prohibitive by officials, who are now looking to tear down the building and replace it with a community center and recreational fields.
“We see this as a unique opportunity for this large parcel of property to create recreational facilities not just for Osterville, but the entire town,” said Osterville Village Association President John Crow.
The proposal includes tennis courts, softball and baseball fields, and multi-use fields.
But tearing down the old school would be difficult for many in the village. “A lot of the people who grew up here went to school there, their children have gone to school there. It’s right in the middle of the village, many rode their bikes there. It’s a wonderful facility and it’s got a lot of sentimental value,” Crow said.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m.
