BARNSTABLE – Several capital projects related to sewer and water treatment have been approved in the Town of Barnstable.
The town council approved a total of $6,799,000 for six projects, including $1,160,000 for the purpose of funding the Rendezvous Lane Pump Station Replacement Project.
DPW Director Dan Santos said the $1.16 million appropriation will be used to install an emergency generator, reconfigure sewer pipes and relocate vital station components outside of the 100-year flood zone.
“The Rendezvous Lane Pump Station was constructed in 1975 and has passed the end of its design life,” said Santos.
“The station operates using outdated technology, using compressed air to eject sewage from the pump station through a force main and into the receiving sewers on Route 6A. The pump station and its electrical components are located well below the 100-year flood zone elevation, and in recent years, the area surrounding the area Rendezvous Lane Pump Station has become completely inundated with flood water on several occasions.”
Town Councilor Jen Cullum expressed concern regarding the cost of the project in relation to the total amount of town residents the pump station serves.
“Given the picture that’s in the Capital Improvement Plan, it doesn’t look like this pump station serves many residences,” Cullum stated.
When informed by Santos that the pump station serves roughly 40-50 residents, Cullum responded by saying, “that’s a big amount of money for forty or fifty residents. Well, when we add in the $3 million for the pump station.”
Funding for the Rendezvous Lane Pump Station Replacement Project, as well as for the other five projects recently approved, is from the Fiscal Year 2020 – Fiscal Year 2024 Capital Improvement Plan.
