Bourne School Committee Picks Interim Superintendent

BOURNE – Perry Davis, former superintendent of the Dover-Sherborn Regional Schools, has been chosen as the interim superintendent for the upcoming school year in Bourne.

Davis said he is ready to help guide the district through the next year.

“It’s kind of like the marine pilot… When they put a pilot on the vessel their job is to transit that vessel through the waters—get them from point A to point B safely. And that’s how I view the role of the interim superintendent. Get to know the district and move it forward,” said Davis.

Other candidates included Melissa Eakins-Ryan, the district’s assistant superintendent, and Sally Dias, an educational consultant out of Greater Boston.

Eakins-Ryan was critical in her current assistant superintendent position, said the Board.

Committee Member Steven Strojny praised Eakins-Ryan in her current role, and questioned how she was going to be able to do both jobs and if it would be asking one person to do too much.

After nine years, Steven Lamarche left Bourne last week to lead the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District.

From 2015 to 2017, Davis was the executive director of the Massachusetts Association of Regional Schools.

Davis also served as consultant coach for the new superintendent induction program at the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents from 2009 to 2015.

As superintendent of the Dover-Sherbon Regional Schools, Davis served from 1997 to 2008.

The Bourne school system will be experiencing some changes this year; one elementary school for kindergarten to Grade 2, with a new intermediate school for grades 3 to 5.

The middle and high school will remain unchanged.

“The superintendent guides and leads those initiatives but really supports all the people who really do the hard work,” said Davis.

“It’s the people in the classroom—they’re the ones who carry out.”
