Barnstable Poilce Warn About Phone Scam

BARNSTABLE – If the phone number 508-414-7900 comes up on your caller i.d. don’t answer it.

Barnstable Police are investigating it as a phone scam. The department has received several calls regarding the call.

The person claims to have a relative hostage whom he threatens harm if the recipient does not send money. He will go as far as to have a woman screaming in the background.

The scammer then demands that the victim purchase prepaid money cards, and after being told to meet the man at several different locations while he remains on the phone he demands that they  provide him with the card numbers.

Barnstable Police Sgt. Sean Sweeney said money is always a red flag.

“If anyone asks you to Western Union, Money Gram, pre-paid cash cards, and read the numbers to them, that is undoubtedly a scam of some sort”.

The money is lost and the transaction is non traceable. It is believed by investigators that this scam is originating outside of the United States.

Police ask that you contact them immediately if you have been a victim.
