Sachem’s Path Project on Nantucket Reaches Milestone

sachemspath_g1NANTUCKET – The first residents of a new affordable housing complex on Nantucket are starting to move in to their homes.

Three first time homeowners have already moved into their Sachem’s Path home, with two more scheduled to close this week and another two next week.

“We’re moving ahead really quickly and all 15 new homes will be occupied by June 1st,” said Housing Assistance Corporation Housing Development Project Manager Kate Ferriera.

HAC has been working on the Sachem’s Path project since 2010.

The average median single family home on Nantucket is $1.2 million.

“To see the joy with these new homeowners, a mortgage that they can afford, a house that’s brand new and to be able to remain on Nantucket and do their year-round work is important for everyone,” said Ferriera.

The community is located on ten acres off Surfside Road, between Miacomet and South Shore roads.

Sachem’s Path consists of 40 one-, two- and three-bedroom single-family homes.

Ferriera said that phase two, which consists of constructing the rest of the homes, will take place soon.

Each home has its own yard and private driveway and are designed to be energy efficient.

The homes are priced to be affordable for mid-income islanders—those making under 150 percent of Nantucket County’s median income (approximately $60,900 and $190,000 annually).

HAC is constructing the project for the Nantucket Housing Authority.

The Town of Nantucket donated the land for the purpose of affordable housing decades ago.
