Shop with a Cop Event Kicks Off Holiday Season for Kids, Officers

HYANNIS – Police officers and kids from across Cape Cod met in Hyannis Wednesday for the 9th annual Shop with a Cop at Christmas event.

Police brought around 40 youths to Sam Diego’s for lunch and then took them to Target at the Cape Cod Mall to purchase holiday gifts.

Sergeant Diana Wells of the Yarmouth Police Department has been facilitating the event for years.

“We really don’t have to convince people to be here; they’re eager to be here, everyone shows up. It’s just as much fun for us as it is for the kids,” Wells said.

“We love being here.”

The holiday Shop with a Cop event is similar to the event held just before school opens at the end of the summer. Wells said that both events serve equally important roles for those in need.

“It’s hard for a lot of families that may not be able to afford gifts or winter clothing, stuff like that,” she continued.

Children chosen for the program were selected by school counselors.

Funding for the program was made possible by private donations. If interested in helping the Shop with a Cop program, email Sergeant Wells at [email protected].
