Falmouth to Restrict Boat Storage on Local Marshes

FALMOUTH – Four signs will be installed around the salt marshes in Falmouth to discourage residents from storing their boats in the area.

The signs will be installed by the conservation department and will be located around Menauhant Road, the east end of Boston Street, the east end of Fenton Street, and the west end of Irving Road.

Boats stored on salt marsh grasses leads to dead vegetation, which then can lead to erosion.

“Basically, it’s alteration to salt marsh, by smothering the vegetation,” said Conservation Administrator Jennifer McKay on how the storage violates regulation.

Administrator McKay says it is a possible first step towards potential enforcement on the salt marshes.

“Then, we’d go out and if the boats are still on the marsh, we’d work with the harbor master and the DPW to then sticker. We have little violation stickers that we’ll put on the boat before we have the town remove them,” said McKay.

Selectman Douglas Brown said there are 30-40 boats being stored on the Great Bay parcel alone.

Selectman Douglas Jones expressed concern that this will be a sudden change for residents used to storing their boats there for possibly decades.

McKay said she would work with the DPW to find other possible locations for people to store their boats, but has no suggestion at this time.
