Speed Limit Markings To Be Installed on Main Street in Barnstable Village

BARNSTABLE – The Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works is planning to install speed reduction markings in the eastbound lane of Main Street (Route 6A) in advance of the curve at Barnstable House, located at 3010 Main Street.

The work is tentatively scheduled the week of November 26, 2018, contingent upon favorable weather and other factors.

Speed reduction markings are white rectangular pavement markings placed on each side of a travel lane, with progressively reduced spacing in the direction of travel. The intent of these markings is to cause drivers to reduce their travel speed heading into the curve, and into the village center.

Speed reduction markings are not widely used, so drivers may be unfamiliar with them. These markings have been proven effective in locations where there is a need to reduce travel speed heading into a curve, and its effectiveness does not rely on prior experience with these markings.

Speed reduction markings are in conformance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices promulgated by the Federal Highway Administration.

This measure is part of a comprehensive traffic calming plan for Main Street in Barnstable Village center.

DPW recently installed additional warning/advisory signs along the curve on Main Street west of Rendezvous Lane. Other planned signage, intended to alert drivers and reduce speeds heading into the village center from the east and west, is pending coordination with MassDOT, which controls Route 6A outside the village center.

Most notably, work scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019 will install medians, raised crosswalks, and other improvements from a point west of Rendezvous Lane to a point east of Millway to reduce vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian safety.
