Renderings of the Mashpee Wampanoag casino planned for Taunton
BROCKTON — Massachusetts gambling regulators are beginning a multi-day review of a casino project in Brockton.
Chicago casino developer Neil Bluhm is proposing a $677 million casino, hotel and entertainment complex for the Brockton Fairgrounds. He’s the lone applicant for the state’s third and final gambling license.
But Bluhm is competing with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, which broke ground last month on a nearly $1 billion resort in Taunton that doesn’t require state approval.
The tribe argues that the southeastern region can only handle one resort, but Bluhm says there’s room for two. The Wampanoag Tribe also says their requirement to make payments to the state under their gaming compact will be eliminated if a commercial casino locates in the same region.
The state Gaming Commission will review the Brockton proposal Tuesday. Regulators are expected to vote as early as Thursday.
MGM and Wynn also are developing major resorts elsewhere in the state
