State Sen. Cyr Participates in Nuclear Power Meetings

TRURO – As the shutdown date for the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth approaches, Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr recently participated in meetings on nuclear power.

Cyr (D-Truro) is the state’s appointee to the National Conference of State Legislators Nuclear Legislative Working Group.

Meetings were held last week in New Orleans to discuss policy regarding the cleanup of nuclear facilities and the storage, disposal and transportation of nuclear waste.

“As our region prepares for the impending closure of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, I am focused on finding every avenue at the state level to ensure a safe and swift decommissioning process,” Cyr said.

“The meetings provided me with a unique opportunity to learn from fellow state lawmakers from across the country who have dealt with nuclear facilities and waste concerns in their backyards.”

The working group is made up of legislators from 34 states that host nuclear power plants, play a role in the cleanup of the nation’s nuclear weapons complex, or are affected by the transportation of nuclear materials. The group has addressed nuclear energy and waste management issues since 1992.
