HYANNIS – Students from across Cape Cod will showcase their music memory skills later this month with a “Name that Tune” style event in East Falmouth.

The Cape Symphony and Conservatory will host its Eighth Annual Music Memory Concert May 31 at Cape Cod Church.

Students from 18 schools will identify classical pieces performed live by the Cape Symphony. Fourteen of the schools will be attending the event at the church and students from four schools will participate via a live-stream.

Some of the towns with schools attending the concert live include Barnstable, Chatham, Dennis-Yarmouth, Falmouth, Orleans and Truro.

“This concert is half pop quiz and half celebration,” said Stephanie Weaver, the executive director of the Cape Conservatory. “The students get to test their memory of the selected compositions in the most fun way possible – a concert with a live orchestra – and have a celebration of their new-found knowledge with other students from across Cape Cod.”

The Music Memory program provides students in 2nd through 8th grades an in-depth study of more than a dozen classical compositions each year. The music is chosen from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods.

Students studied a range of composers this year, including Mozart, Bach and Brahms.

“Throughout the school year, they engaged in a range of activities to help solidify their learning, from creative and structured movement and singing to performing on rhythm and melody instruments,” Weaver said.

The Conservatory provides specialized training sessions for music teachers who participate, including teaching tools such as video maps, recordings and lesson plans.

The Symphony will be joined by a chamber ensemble from the Falmouth Chorale on four selections during the concert.

Dancers from the Cape Conservatory Youth Ballet will also perform during one of the three full-length pieces during the concert.
