Symposium Held in Hyannis Addresses Knee Injury Prevention, Management

HYANNIS – The second annual Sports Symposium was hosted by Peter Bentivegna of Cape Cod Healthcare Saturday for students, families, and medical professionals at Barnstable High School’s Knight Auditorium.

This year’s symposium focused on preventing and managing knee injuries for high school athletes.

Guest speakers such as Injury Prevention Specialist for The Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention Sara Carpenito broke down how injuries are diagnosed, treated, and avoided.

A point brought up by Carpenito was that hamstrings and glutes are more important to knee injury recovery than one might think.

“We find that once we’re able to strengthen those areas, the pressure on the front of the knee actually decreases, and the pain decreases,” Carpenito said.

Training exercises during the rehabilitation phase were also outlined by Carpenito, who noted that knee injury recovery for athletes, especially in high school, is not as simple as making sure one can walk or jog properly again.

“We need to get you back in athlete shape. We’ve got to make sure that when you go out on the field, you’re going to be ready. You’re not going to be dying out there for two hours,” Carpenito said.

Attendees were able to have their questions answered by medical professionals in attendance. The event offered a communal learning experience for all involved.
