Target to Open at Cape Cod Mall In 2019

HYANNIS- Target has officially announced plans to open a new 80,000-square-foot store in 2019 at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis.

“Target’s a great example of just a terrific retailer that is wildly popular and providing new formats as well, in terms of fitting their merchandise offering to the community in which they serve,” said Les Morris, spokesperson for Simon Properties, which owns the mall on Route 132.

The Cape Cod Mall store will be the eighth of these formats in the state, offering many of the same categories customers expect in a full-size store.

The retailer said it will have a curated assortment of products to match the needs and preferences of the community.

“In terms of the mall, it is a tremendous announcement for us,” said Morris.

When opened, the store will bring 100 new jobs for Cape residents in an effort to help deliver a great shopping experience.

“A quick trip shopping experience here on Cape Cod would include an assortment of kids products. So basics, apparel, toys, we will have a selection of home décor, beach and vacation essentials, said Target spokesperson Jaqueline DeBuse.

“We will also offer a Starbucks at this location and we will have order pickup, where guests can order from target.com and pick up there order in an hour or less,” she said.

Founded in 1946, the Minneapolis-based corporation currently operates 1,829 stores throughout North America.

“Target continues to receive a warm reception from our guests throughout Massachusetts, and we look forward to providing a one-of-a-kind shopping experience on the Cape,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target.

“With a range of products across kids, home, beach and seasonal items, and everyday essentials, this store’s assortment and overall experience are designed especially for Cape Cod residents and seasonal visitors,” he said.

Barnstable’s town manager praised the announcement Tuesday in a statement released by Target.

“The Town of Barnstable is excited to welcome Target to the Cape Cod Mall. This decision underscores the strong market demand and potential for retail development in the Hyannis area,” said Mark Ells.

Retailers nationwide have been struggling in recent years as they face fierce competition from online sellers.

“We are excited about this new anchor tenant of the Cape Cod Mall, and look forward to teaming up with Target to bring an exceptional retail experience to the Cape,” said Jason Huer, mall manager.

“This Target will bring goods and services that are tailored to the community, and will be a popular destination for neighborhood residents and visitors alike,” he said in a statement.

The new Target will be located in the area of the current Sears. It was unclear if Sears would continue to have a presence in Hyannis.

Sears, once an American retail icon, has suffered major financial woes in recent years. According to Forbes, the chain had suffered six consecutive years of losses as of the end of last year.
