YARMOUTH – Cape Cod’s most famous pirate shipwreck was discovered 32 years ago this month.
The Whydah remains the world’s only authenticated pirate shipwreck.
As a boy, Barry Clifford dreamed of finding the sunken wreck. That dream came true on October 30th 1985 when he and his team found the ship’s bell. Inscribed on the bell was “The Whydah Gally 1716″.
Clifford said he can’t believe it’s been 32 years.
Over that time countless other Whydah discoveries have been made. The Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth showcases thousands of artifacts including treasure, pistols and cannons.
The museum continues to reveal new artifacts as Clifford and his team make nearly constant new discoveries.
The opportunity to see, touch and learn about artifacts that date back 300 years, has made the museum one of the Cape’s most popular.
