UMass-Amherst capital campaign surpasses goal, raises $379M

umass-amherstAMHERST, Mass. (AP) — The University of Massachusetts Amherst has raised $379 million in the largest capital campaign in state public higher education history, easily surpassing the $300 million goal.

The state’s flagship campus announced Monday that more than 103,000 donors contributed to the UMass Rising Campaign, which brought in the five largest gifts in university history. The campaign launched in 2010 officially closed June 30, a year ahead of schedule.

About $108 million was raised for the university’s permanent endowment and another $164 million was raised for academic and research programs, $67 million more than the goal. The campaign helped establish more than 24 new permanent professorships. Some of the money will be used for student scholarships and infrastructure.

Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy says the campaign’s success will help “ensure our ongoing momentum.”
