Wellfleet Select Board Votes Against Halting Rail Trail Expansion

WELLFLEET – The Wellfleet Select Board recently voted 3-2 against a petition to halt a planned expansion of the Cape Cod Rail Trail along Route 6.

The petition, started by the Concerned Citizens for a Sensible Wellfleet Bikeway, garnered over 1,300 signatures. It said that the extension endangers both motorists and bicyclists.

Dale Donovan of Concerned Citizens said the group was looking for the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation to consider other options for expansion.

“Ask DCR to stop the plan at this point. Look at other options, work with the town,” Donovan explained.

“That’s what (the select board) refused to do.”

Donovan said that Concerned Citizens is aiming to get the petition on Governor Charlie Baker’s desk.

“We’re just getting the cheap end of the stick here in Wellfleet: no tunnel, no bridge, no nothing,” he continued.

“They’re doing it because it’s the cheap and quick way, and it will make the DCR people look good.”

Donovan also said that legal action to halt the plan is a possibility Concerned Citizens may explore.
