Wellfleet SPAT Offering Unique Shellfish Farm Tours

WELLFLEET – This summer Wellfleet Shellfish Promotion And Tasting, or SPAT, is hosting tours of working shellfish farms, to show exactly what goes into getting that shellfish from the flats to your plate.

Tour participants will suit up, wade out to a 3-acre site, see a number of different species in different stages of growth, and learn more about the Cape’s natural environment.

“We thought this would be a way we could educate the public about what’s involved,” said Michelle Insley, Executive Director of Wellfleet SPAT.

“We could do the interpretation for the shellfish farmers and also just let people know the careful work that’s involved in getting this product to market.”

In Wellfleet aquaculture is an economic engine. There are approximately 100 shellfish farms, employing upwards of 300 people.

“With the multiplier effect, that’s a lot of money coming into the town as a result ($5.6 million annually) of this industry and it creates valuable jobs, enabling people to have a living wage on Cape Cod,” Insley said.

Space for these unique tours is limited, for more information and to register click here.
