Students and staff celebrated the last day of school Wednesday for the Henry T. Wing School in Sandwich.

The Wing school opened in 1927 and housed the town’s entire school population until a high school was built in 1976.

The Sandwich School District Administrators’ offices and curriculum offices will be relocated to the building in a move that will ease the pressure on the town as it explores permanent options, according to Sandwich Schools Superintendent Richard Canfield.

The move will also create more room for classrooms at the neighboring Oak Ridge School, a benefit Canfield said will alleviate the need to use “portables” as classrooms.

A preliminary report from a consultant hired to evaluate options for renovations and repairs to the school included a $72 million option to restore the original building, tear down the rest of the building and construct a new building.

The study was conducted by Kaestle Boos Architects and included four potential options with the least expensive coming in at $3.7 million.

That option would leave the 1927 section intact, tear down the additions, and landscape that area.

Other possibilities include leaving the entire complex in place and making mostly exterior repairs, and bringing the entire structure—inside and out—up to current code.
