PROVINCETOWN – The head of the Cape Cod National Seashore says work began Thursday to repair winter storm damage to the north parking lot at Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown.

Superintendent George Price said that 70 parking spaces will remain in use during the 2-3 week project.

The parking lot at Herring Cove suffered significant erosion damage during the string of winter storms earlier this year. Sections of pavement were ripped apart by the wave and wind action.

Herring Cove, where cars can pull right up to the edge of the beach, is one of the most popular destination spots in the National Seashore. It’s a favorite place to spot whales and see sunsets.

The 400 spaces in the south lot at Herring Cove were not impacted.

“It is unfortunate that it took so long to engage a contractor to undertake the repair work this year, but the good news is that the work is underway and we are confident they will complete the job as soon as possible,” Price said

Contractors will limit activity during the three-day 4th of July holiday weekend. “We have several areas at the north lot that have been severely damaged by the winter storms,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s actually still going on into July, but that’s the nature of when we received the funding and when were actually able to get a contract in place,” said Price

A long-term fix that would elevate the lot by 15 feet and move it back 125 feet is currently in the review stage. Price said they should get at least 50 years out of the new parking lot once it’s constructed.

“That is on a priority list with the rest of the line item construction for all the national parks in the country. But right now it’s not in the immediate future,” Keating said.

In Eastham, the Nauset Light Beach stairs destroyed in the winter storms were just recently replaced. Price said an accessible boardwalk that was threatened by erosion has also been fixed.

A project to reconstruct the Province Lands Road delayed by the brutal winter has been completed. The section of the bike trail that was closed for replacement of the bike tunnels under Province Lands Road is also open.
