YARMOUTH – A scaled down affordable housing proposal at the former Cavalier Motor Lodge in Yarmouth on Route 28 has received support from the town’s Community Housing Committee.

The new proposal from developer Dakota Partners will include 82 units which is down from 120 in previous plans.

The new plan does not include using the Bass River Motel property and decreases the proposal from three stories to two.

Dakota Partners also eliminated proposed retail space due to traffic concerns.

Karen Greene, the director of community development in Yarmouth, said the project is still in the early planning phase.

“They need to do real site plans and real concept rendering of the project,” she said. “They’ll be coming back through our design review, our site plan review. They’ll also eventually be making a trip to the Yarmouth Board of Selectmen.”

The developers were scheduled to present to selectmen this week but postponed to be better prepared, according to Greene.

Greene believes the proposal would be a good use of the property.

“It is a blighted property,” she said. “So the proposal that we have is a good alternative to what’s there.”

Opponents to the project are concerned about traffic issues and the character of the building, according to Greene.
