Yarmouth Officials Consider Embracing Organic Lawn Care Alternatives

YARMOUTH – Officials in Yarmouth are looking into alternatives which will allow the town to reduce its use of potentially harmful chemicals on municipal properties.

The matter came before selectmen recently as Laura Kelley of Protect Our Cape Aquifer warned of the effects which certain chemicals can have on both humans and animals.

In particular, Kelley cited active ingredients in the weed-killer Roundup which has been determined harmful to both to both people and bees.

As she makes the rounds to each of the cape’s 15 town, Kelley has advocated the use of alternative lawn care substances including those offered by Chatham-based Pure Solutions which specializes in organic options.

While a motion from Selectman Tracy Post to accept Kelley’s recommendation immediately failed to garner enough support, the board did agree to investigate and revisit the matter later this month.
