Transportation Challenge to be Held in Yarmouth in September

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Senior Center is partnering with the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority to host Transportation Challenge for all ages.

“It had a modest beginning the first year, then grew the second year, and this year it’s really exploding. We’re really excited about it,” said Karen LeBlanc, Senior Center Special Projects.

Participants will try to find as many new and different kinds of transportation as possible during the month of September, competing for a host of prizes and a tee shirt.

“The whole concept is we’re trying to introduce people to various modes of transportation within the area,” said LeBlanc.

LeBlanc mentioned all kinds of modes of transportation that were viable from biking, to buses, to airlines, to Uber rides.

“As many different types of transportation as possible other than a single person riding in an automobile. The whole reason for this is to reduce traffic and the carbon footprint as well,” said LeBlanc.

Participants will write in a journal provided by the Senior Center on what they did differently during the month and how many varied kinds of transportation they used.

The journal will be collected at the end of the event and used to tally up the totals.

LeBlanc said that the aim of the event is to inform the public.

“That’s the main point, to educate people and also to give them the schedules and introduce them to other ways of getting around.

And of course with our bike trails, it’s a wonderful thing to get from point A to point B and I’m not sure a lot of people are aware of the vast choices that are out there.”

LeBlanc reminded that the CCRTA buses are free for seniors on Wednesdays.

The event runs for the first 21 days of September, and culminates with the worldwide “No Car Day” on September 22.
