21-0: Vineyard Girls Head to State Title Match

LEXINGTON – For the first time this season, the Vineyarders were truly challenged but the ladies in purple and white rose above the hype Wednesday to remain undefeated (21-0) as they downed the 20-0 Lynnfield team yesterday, 3-2, in the MIAA Division 3 State Semifinals at Lexington High.

“(We’re) so happy for the girls,” Vineyard assistant coach Liz Roberts said, “especially the seniors.”

With the victory, the Vineyarders now advance to Friday’s Division 3 state championship match against Central Massachusetts sectional champion Hopedale High (19-3) on Friday, June 19 at St. John’s (Shrewsbury) at 2:30 pm for all the marbles.

“It came down to Kat (Roberts) again to win the third set,” asst. coach Roberts said. “Two doubles (teams from Lynnfield) had taken the win as Kat (Roberts) had split sets.”

Vineyard second singles player Kat Roberts fell in the first set she had versus Kolly Nevils, 6-4, but then bounced back for a 7-6 win in the second set. In the third set, Roberts dominated, 6-1 for the win and the difference-maker in the Vineyard semifinal victory.

Vineyard third singles player Lizzie Williamson was no less challenged as she battled it out in equal fashion against Lynnfield’s senior captain Izzy Figucia. Williamson took the first set, 6-1, then fell in the second set, 7-6, but then prefvailed in the third and final set, 6-2.

It was the Vineyard ace Samantha Potter who made quick matters of things in her match against Sarah Mezini, defeating Mezini at first singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Both Vineyard doubles teams fell, however, but the point became moot with the aforementioned three singles wins.

Charlotte Potter and Josie Iadicicco fell at first doubles to to Lynnfield’s Katie Nevils and Olivia Skelly, 7-5, 6-3, and Lia Potter and Madison McBride both fell to Carrie Foley and Katie Nugent , 6-0, 6-3.
