In back-to-back games in weather better reserved for a Thanksgiving Day football game, superlative Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School athlete Michael Dunn did not disappoint in leading the Dolphins to come-from-behind victories. Both defensively and offensively, the senior catcher came up with clutch extra-base hits to drive in runs in late-inning rallies and he did it against some of the best high school pitching Cape Cod has to offer. Truthfully, his effort spelled the difference between D-Y starting the year at 2-0 rather than 0-2 and the way the weather is going this spring that might as well be like winning the state sectionals. For his efforts, Dunn is this week’s Capecod.com Athlete of the Week and the first student-athlete to be named a Capecod.com Athlete of the Week in two different sports. He was our first selection at the end of last fall’s high school football season and we have no doubt we have not heard the last of this tough-as-nails, talented young man for some time to come.

Pitching, in softball, is everything, it’s been said. Thus, when one takes a quick look at one of the central reasons why St. John Paul II softball has jumped out to an early, 4-0 record, one need look no further than senior righty ace Jackie Smith. Not only has Smith delivered the firepower on the mound for the Lady Lions – with stellar performances such as her opening-day, complete-game one-hitter with six strikeouts – but her bat as part of a one-two punch with fellow co-captain and backstop Hadley Tate has been equally formidable. She’s had multiple hits and RBI in all four games and pound-for-pound, this Western Connecticut State University-bound ballplayer has been everything a high school coach could ask for. Whether it’s been to keep runners off base or plate them for the offense, Jackie Smith ended the first week of the 2015 high school season as the top female softball performer on Cape Cod at 4-0 on the hill and is hands-down this week’s Capecod.com Female Athlete of the Week.
