BOURNE — Sophomore goaltender Gil Bach notched his second shutout of the season and his teammates gave him five goals on the other end as the St. John Paul II Lions (6-7) blanked the host Upper Cape Tech Rams (1-13), 5-0, last night at the Gallo Ice Arena.
The Lions had one goal called back after it was discovered by the referees that too many men were on the ice during a power play.
St. John Paul II assistant captain Brian Bradley notched two goals and had one assist to lead the guests in scoring. Fellow junior assistant captain Peter Barker notched a goal and had one assist and sophomore forward Pat Connolly had a goal and two assists.
It was Lions’ junior defenseman Danny Mazzola, however, who gave St. John Paul II all it would need to win when he scored unassisted at the 1:38 mark in the first period.
The Lions led after the first frame, 1-0, then tacked on three second period goals for a 4-0 lead after two periods. Bradley scored the fifth goal in the waning minutes of the final period.
Upper Cape Tech’s goaltender Evan Dellacosta was to be commended on his effort throughout the night as St. John Paul II literally peppered the young backstop with consistently wide-open shots.
St. John Paul II returns to action Saturday night at 7:00 pm at the Falmouth Ice Arena against the tough Cape Cod Tech/Cape Cod Academy Crusaders.
