Red Raiders Prove Too Much for Visiting Nantucket Whalers

HYANNIS – The Red Raiders’ athleticism was too much for Nantucket to handle, as the Barnstable High girls’ lacrosse dominated all phases of Saturday afternoon’s game with a 15-2 Maritime League victory on Saturday afternoon.

Barnstable senior co-captain Emma Glover set the tone early at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field, as she scored three goals in the opening nine minutes of the one-sided affair.

Glover’s early trifecta helped the Red Raiders (2-4) race out to a quick, 6-0 lead over the visiting Whalers and the quick-wristed attacker finished the game with six tallies in all. Junior Callie Rogorzenski and Kylie Hallam each scored twice in the victory.

“I thought the offense did great today, they were patient with each other and were each doing their own job,” Barnstable head coach Jen Sadler said.  “They let things develop and were looking for each other. We’ve been a good one-on-one team but not always off the pass or looking for each other so we are developing.”

Barnstable held a 9-1 lead at the half, and kept the pressure on in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the half to take a 12-1 lead.

Nantucket got both of its goals, one in each half, from KD Tornovish in the loss.

The Red Raiders carried possession for much of the game, benefitting from dominance on the draws. Rogorzenski, Aislin Hampstead and Olivia Pearsall split duties on the draw, giving the Red Raiders extra possessions.

“I thought they did very well, and on the circle, Laine Delaney and Nicole Derosier did a great job picking up those ground balls and getting it out of there,” Sadler said.

With a large lead down the stretch, Sadler emptied her bench, getting goals from a variety of relatively new contributors. Mackenzie Curtice, Shannon Roycroft and Hampstead all found the net in the final 13 minutes of the game.

“You learn from playing, so it’s nice when you get some people to work with who know what they are doing,” said Sadler.

The Red Raiders have two days off, before meeting up with Nantucket again on Tuesday afternoon (April 21).
