Barnstable Post 206 Blanks Wareham Post 220, Walsh Tosses Two-Hitter; Post 188 Rolls

HYANNIS – Clark University’s Conor Walsh went the distance and struck out 11 batters for a complete-game two-hitter as the defending District 10 East Division champions blanked visiting Wareham Post 220, 7-0, at McKeon Park last night.

The returning two-time District 10 All-District team righthander walked only two in the 7-inning shutout. Sturgis East freshman Andrew Williams turned in a rock-solid game behind the dish and added a double at the plate in the effort.

It was Dennis-Yarmouth’s Drew Gallant (2-3, RBI) that got things going for Post 206 offensively in the bottom of the second inning after a scoreless first, leading off with a single. He was followed by first baseman Eric Holzman (1-1, 2 walks, 2 runs) who singled and then both advanced on a double steal. UMass-Dartmouth’s Micah Gregory then ripped an RBI-single that would give Walsh all he would need for the win. Cape Cod Academy’s Dan Crossen drove in Holzman to make it 2-0.

Post 206 (1-3) picked up another pair of runs in the third inning after Dennis-Yarmouth’s Jake Gleason (2-4) ripped an opposite field double and then scored on a Mike Knell triple to make it 3-0. Knell came home on a sac fly from Gallant to make it 4-0. Massachusetts Maritime Academy outfielder Drew Tardif went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Sandwich Post 188 Defeats Plymouth Post 40 on the Road, Chevalier Shines Again

PLYMOUTH – The Sandwich Post 188 American Legion baseball team (5-1) continued its torrid pace atop District 10’s East Division with a rock-solid, 6-2, win over Plymouth Post 40 (3-2) at Siever Field last night.

Northern University’s Luke Chevalier turned in his second complete-game gem this season, as the righty went the distance, struck out eight, walked one and scattered six hits while allowing just two earned runs.

“Chevalier and Nick (Couhig) look really good so far,” said Post 188 head coach K.J. Kozens. “We have some good pitching, just need to stay healthy and fresh.”

Mashpee High’s Ari Purdy led off the top of the first with a walk, was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Sandwich High’s Brady Doherty and then came home on a Nick Couhig (3-4, 2 runs) RBI-basehit to make it 1-0. Couhig eventually came home to make it 2-0 after three consecutive walks.

Post 188 then added all it would need in the second frame with a one-out, four-run rally that started with a Purdy (2-2, 2 runs) single, double by Doherty, RBI-triple by Collin Russell and Couhig’s second hit of the night.

Plymouth Post 40 picked up single runs in the sixth and seventh frames but it was too little, too late.
