HYANNIS – Down 68-63 heading into the day’s final event, the Barnstable High School girls’ track and field team pulled off a huge 4x400m relay victory to tie Falmouth 68-68 Tuesday afternoon at the Enoch Cobb Track at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field.
The Red Raiders finish the dual meet season at 2-3-1, while the Clippers finish at 3-2-1 on the campaign. Both teams will now send individual representatives to their respective Division meets next week.
Both teams captured eight first place finishes on the beautifully mild, albeit windy day.
“The girls worked hard today,” said Barnstable High assistant coach Jim Buckman. “(They) gave their best and stepped it up to tie Falmouth. It’s a great way to end the season.”
For Falmouth, Natalie Gagnon captured the high jump with her mark of 4’6” followed by Lexi Axon in the javelin (93’3”) and senior Meghan Burke in the shotput (26’11”). It was Burke’s last career dual meet victory as she finished second all-time at Falmouth High in the girls’ shotput with her 2014 mark of 30’11.5”. Burke also took first place in the discus with her mark of 76’6”, well shy of her all-time Falmouth High record set earlier this season at 92’2”.
Clipper senior Lauren O’Neil took first place in two-mile race at 13:22 and senior Sarah Buscher took first in the 100 high hurdles at 17.54. Fellow senior Caroline Cobb notched first place in the girls’ mile at 5:59.59 and the Clipper 4×100 relay team notched first at 56.40.
Barnstable’s Morgan Richard captured the long jump at 16’11” while also taking the triple jump with her leap of 33’11.5”. Richard, a senior, made it a perfect trifecta with a victory in the 100m race at 13.13 seconds.
Red Raider Kyle Willis took a pair of first place finishes with a victory in the 400 low hurdles at 74.75 and the 800m race (2:49.75). Teammate Madelyn McCartin captured the 400m race with her time of 1:06.16 and Amanda Wilson turned in a time of 28.11 in the 200.
The grand finale was Barnstable’s win in the 4×400 relay with a time of 5:00.52 in the day’s last event.
