Barnstable Tennis Boys, Vineyard Girls Roll to Sectional Championship

HYANNIS – When the high school season – in any sport – begins creeping into mid-June, you know something is going exceptionally right for your team.

Thus was the case Wednesday afternoon for both the Barnstable High School boys’ tennis team (19-1) and the still unbeaten Martha’s Vineyard girls’ tennis team (19-0) as they both rolled through their respective South Sectional semifinal matches.

The #2 seed Barnstable boys soundly defeated #6 seed Wellesley (15-3) by a score of 5-0 at Barnstable High, and with a couple of continued superlative efforts.

Sophomore Max Francis had his hands full in his first set at third singles against Michael Pioso but edged the senior 7-5 before dominating him in the second set, 6-1. First singles player Sonny Bisazza’s match against Michael Rosen was in hand, 6-3, 6-1, and junior Tyler Shibles took second singles over sophomore Alex Kley, 6-0, 6-2.

“They had a quiet confidence,” Barnstable head coach Mike Sarney said. “That’s for sure.”

The Barnstable first doubles team – Donnie Brodd and Cooper Blaze – had a bit of a challenge at the outset of their match against senior Dan Foley and junior Alex Chapman, with an eventual 7-6 (7-4) win, but then took care of business with a 6-1 win to seal things. Cooper Hesse and Daniel Dettinger-Klemm dropped their second doubles opener, 7-6, to Alex Novins and Will Rosen – both freshmen – but then rebounded with a 6-1 win and a 14-12 tiebreaker victory.

Barnstable will face #1 seed Brookline (17-0) on Friday at 3:00 pm at Hingham High School for all the marbles in the Division 1 South Sectional Championship match.

Vineyarders Stay the Course, Remain Unbeaten at 19-0 versus Cohasset

The resilient, gritty and top-seed Martha’s Vineyard girls (19-0) pulled out a huge, 3-2, Division 3 South Sectional Semifinal victory over win over #4 seed Cohasset Wednesday afternoon in Oak Bluffs and will advance to the sectional championship tomorrow.

The Vineyarders will take the ferry to the mainland tomorrow (Friday) to Old Rochester Regional High School where they will face #2 seed Dover-Sherborn for the sectional championship.

First singles player Samantha Potter sustained a rare loss to Cohasset’s Emma Davis, 6-1, 6-0, but teammates Kat Roberts and Lizzie Williamson rose victoriously at second and third singles, respectively.

Roberts defeated Caroline Van Etten, 6-0, 6-3, and Williamson defeated Meredith Corry, 6-0, 6-0.

Charlotte Potter and Josie Iadicco solidified the Vineyard victory when they defeated Emily Livingstone and Ryan Spicer 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, at first doubles and that was fortunate because Cohasset’s second doubles defeated Amadine Muniz and Lia Potter, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
