Sandwich Blue Knights Run Down Nauset Warriors

EAST SANDWICH — The Sandwich Blue Knights have proven they are by no means a one-trick pony.

Facing a tough Nauset Regional squad at home, Sandwich ran its record to 6-1 by truly dominating every aspect of the game from the get-go. The Blue Knights led the visiting Warriors 23-6 at the end of the first quarter, 45-18 at the half and 66-27 after three frames en route to a decisive 78-54 victory. The loss drops Nauset to 6-3.

“We got on top of them right from the start,” Sandwich head coach Dennis Green said. “We put pressure on their big guys (Razz Green and Ethan Ladue) and ran with it.”

This was a game that saw virtually every young man in uniform score a basket. All totaled, Sandwich had 10 players score with Andrew Galanek leading all scorers with 23 points and senior captain Joey Downes finishing the night with 17 points. Fellow senior captain Hank O’Brien ended the night with 12 points. The Blue Knights’ starting lineup saw the court for all of 30 seconds in the fourth quarter as Green emptied his bench in the second half.

An equal number of Nauset Warriors also scored, with Mark Takajian netting 12 points on the night, eight of which came in the fourth quarter. Nauset’s Eric Poyant finished with nine points, as did Andrew Flynn, but Ladue and Green were held to a combined 10 points.

To Nauset’s credit, it did not quit, even when down by as much as 38 points at the outset of the fourth quarter.

Nauset coach John McCarthy implemented a full court press through most of the last frame, giving Green pause to return his starting five to the floor for two baskets before returning his substitutes.

Nauset looks to get back on track against Upper Cape Tech on Monday night in Eastham at 6:30 pm.

Sandwich takes on a tough Marshfield team at home on Tuesday night at 6:30 pm in an Atlantic Coast League tilt.
