St. John Paul II High School Senior Student-Athlete Diego Meritus (Yarmouth, MA) will be attending Middlebury College next fall where he will major in Biology. The 2015 Catholic Central Small Football League Most Valuable Player and three-time league all-star will continue his football career under Coach Bob Ritter and Staff as a member of the Middlebury College Panther Football Team.  Diego was a two-sport standout athlete for the Lions, earning varsity letters in football and basketball all four years of high school. He was a co-captain in both sports this year. Meritus received numerous accolades for his on- and off-field accomplishments while attending St. John Paul II High School.

Barnstable High School graduate and Simmons College softball star Hannah Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass./BHS Class of 2012) was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference, 2nd team for the third time in her collegiate career this week. Cunningham gets the All-Conference nod for the third time after being named to the Second Team after being selected to the Third Team as a freshman and junior. The leadoff hitter led the Sharks with 25 runs scored, which was good for 12th among GNAC leaders, while placing 11th in the league with a pair of triples and 19thwith six doubles as part of nine extra-base hits on the year. The shortstop started 31 of 32 games and batted .263 (30-114) with 18 runs batted in to rank third on the team, while placing second with 30 hits and fourth with 10 walks. The Captain excelled at the plate with runners in scoring position, hitting .333 (12-36) and also knocked in half of her runs with two outs. A graduate of Barnstable High School, Cunningham racked up eight multi-hit games to tie for second on the team, including a team-high of three occasions with three or more hits in a game. She was 3-5 with four RBI, a triple and two runs scored in a win at Rivier University on March 29. For her career, the senior has hit .298 (142-476) in 138 games with 119

runs scored, 73 runs batted in, 19 doubles, seven triples and five home runs to go with a .358 on-base percentage. She is majoring in Nursing with a minor in Psychology at Simmons and is the daughter of Kathleen VanTwyver and Paul Cunningham of Cotuit.

Barnstable High School graduate (Class of 2011) and former cross country and track & field long distance man Greg Hardy took 16th place last Saturday (April 25) at the NESCAC Track & Field Championships while performing for the Tufts University men’s track & field team. Hardy ran the men’s 10K race amidst the top runners in the Northeast and helped lead the Jumbos to their third consecutive NESCAC championship title. Tufts beat out the men’s teams from Williams, Bates, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Wesleyan, Colby, Amherst, Trinity, Connecticut College and Hamilton. Hardy is a senior at Tufts majoring in biopsychology and he is the son of Chris Hardy and Donna DeRosa.

Massachusetts Maritime freshman outfielder Alexis Jendzejec was named on Wednesday morning to the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball All-Conference Team in a vote of the league’s eight coaches, as the rookie earned second team all-league accolades for her performance during her inaugural collegiate campaign.

A native of West Greenwich, R.I. and a graduate of The Greene School, Jendzejec led the Buccaneers with a .340 batting average (16-47) while starting all 18 games played this spring, as she rapped out five doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in five runs.  Alexis posted a .556 slugging percentage and a .415 on-base percentage that included four stolen bases.

Jendzejec, who becomes the first Massachusetts Maritime all-conference performer on the softball diamond in five years, helped lead Head Coach Megan Giammalvo’s Buccaneers to their highest single-season victory total in a decade this spring.
