Cape Cod High School Baseball Teams Set to Battle

FRANKLIN — With one of the most brutal, snowbound springs now but a hopeful, distant memory, 11 of Cape Cod’s high school baseball teams remain and will begin their quest for postseason glory starting Wednesday with Sturgis East and West, Monomoy and Nantucket, all in Division 4.

Nauset's Chris Holcomb will likely pitch Saturday versus Milton in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional.

Sturgis West (9-7), which picked up the 15th seed out of 20 Division 4 teams that earned a postseason bid and will be making the school’s first-ever MIAA postseason appearance, will face 18th-seeded Archbishop Williams (9-9) at home (likely at Cape Cod Academy) on Thursday at 4:00 pm in a preliminary round. Sturgis East (10-10), in its 4th straight postseason tournament, picked up the 19th seed out of 20 teams and will hit the road to face 14th-seeded Cohasset (11-7) at Cohasset High School on Thursday at 4:00 pm, also in a preliminary round game. The Monomoy Regional High School squad (11-7) got the 13th seed and will face 20th-seeded Millis (3-17) at BFC Whitehouse Field in Harwich on Thursday at 4:00 pm (preliminary round). The 17th-seed Nantucket Whalers (8-8) head to 16th-seed Westport (10-8) on Thursday at 4:00 pm (preliminary round).

Barnstable High School (10-10), the Cape’s sole Division 1 South baseball representative, has been in every MIAA South Sectional since 1997 but has not won the South Sectional title since 1988. The Red Raiders are seeded 11th out of 11 teams in the south and will hit the road on Thursday, June 4, to face 6th-seeded Walpole (12-8) at Walpole High School at 4:00 pm.

On Friday, June 5, Mashpee (15-7), Upper Cape Tech (13-7) and  St. John Paul II (19-1/18-0) — who each received a bye from the preliminary round — will all face opponents in the first round of play. Mashpee, seeded 6th in Division 4, will face Southeastern Regional (13-7) at 4:00 pm on Friday at home. Upper Cape Tech (13-7) will square off on the road against Diman Regional (13-5) on Friday, also at 4:00 pm. The top-seeded St. John Paul II Lions, who captured their fifth straight Cape & Islands League title and are the defending Div. 4 State Champs, will play the winner of the Westport-Nantucket game on Thursday. The Lions will host the first round match-up at 6:00 pm at McKeon Park in Hyannis.
