Only a junior and with his Monomoy Sharks still very much alive in the MIAA Division 4 SouthSectional baseball tournament (Monomoy faces Upper Cape Tech today at Doran Park at 5:30 pm), right-hander David Nichols put himself squarely on the Cape Cod high school baseball map with a superlative preliminary round performance last week against Millis. His 17 strikeouts were indicative of just how much raw talent he’s kept largely a secret in his 6’5” lanky frame and his fastball ranks among the very best we’ve seen all season. McCann ran her leg in 2:27.95, followed by Coughlin at 2:30.71, Jamiel at 2:35.79 and then Levesque at 2:37.28. For the Dolphins’ cumulative effort, longtime head coach Jim Hoar’s girls were awarded their third straight MIAA Division 3 Track & Field Sportsmanship Award as an added bonus. McCann also ran a personal best in the 2-mile at 11:50.48.

To top things off, sophomore shot put champ Chloe Eressy, who set and shattered her own school records this year four times, took fifth place Saturday at the MIAA All-State Championship at Fitchburg State College with her throw of 37’7″ and she will now advance to the New England High School Track &

Field Championships in Maine for a chance at a regional title. All combined, the continued efforts of Dolphin girls track athletes made them an unequivocal selection for Athlete of the Week.
