With the high school hockey season providing some of the most exciting entertainment around this winter, it makes sense that local hockey fans eyes’ would be riveted to the fastest and most intense athletes, but just as importantly, to the ones who get the job done.

Barnstable High’s senior assistant captain Mike McDonough, as his head coach Scott Nickerson said early last week, literally “controls the puck” when he’s on the Red Raider ice, not to fail to mention, he makes good things happen. Last Saturday night in Hyannis, McDonough, a stellar defenseman, notched his first-ever career hat trick and he did so in grand fashion in a 7-1 win over archrival Falmouth. McDonough followed that effort up with a phenomenal performance against perennial Super Eight contender Xaverian that included a blistering blue line slap shot for the go ahead goal in the third period in a game that ended up a 3-3 tie.

Our female Capecod.com Athlete of the Week goes to a spectacular, speed-skating spitfire from the town of Falmouth who has blazed her way into the forefront this season with the high-ranked Clipper girls. Freshman phenom McKenzie Haberl had a career day versus Duxbury last week, netting a hat trick and adding an assist in a 6-1 win over the vaunted Duxbury Green Dragons and followed that incredible effort up with the only goal Falmouth would need Friday night in a 2-0 win for the SEMGHL Coastal Division title. She further solidified her selection as Athlete of the Week when she helped secure the title on an assist for goal number two to Kelly Ferreira.
