COTUIT – Northern University righty Luke Chevalier was brilliant Friday night at Lowell Park for Sandwich Post 188 American Legion baseball, spoiling the season-opener for host Barnstable Post 206 in an 8-2 tilt.
Down 2-1 after Post 206’s Jake Gleason’s opposite-field home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Sandwich Post 188 stormed back for five runs in the top of the fifth and never looked back.
Chevalier went the distance on the mound for Post 188 and struck out nine while walking just two. Post 206 used three pitchers and afforded its guest four walks, hit four batters and gave up 10 hits en route to the loss.
It was the first time Post 206 lost a season-opener since 2010.
Post 188’s Drew Boli went 2-4 on the night with two RBI, including an RBI-double in Sandwich’s five-run fifth.
Barnstable’s two runs in the fourth came on a Mike Knell two-out triple followed by Gleason’s opposite-field home run.
Post 206 welcomes Kingston Post 387 to Lowell Park tomorrow (Sunday) at 5:00 pm.
